Since Alfa Romeo announced its path, the industry and fans have been wondering if Valtteri Bottas will return to Mercedes. Yes, but not in the way we thought!
If the information from former F1 driver and current insider Christian Fittipaldi is true, Bottas could return as Toto Wolff's right-hand man, in a sort of mentoring role. The comparison to a right-hand man is not at all far-fetched, as Fittipaldi's information suggests Bottas will take over from Jerome d'Ambrosio, who is leaving for Ferrari.
Just how big a step this move would be for the Finn is illustrated by the fact that d'Ambrosio was considered a serious candidate to become Mercedes team principal following Wolff's departure, having led the Mercedes team on numerous occasions as deputy. If the news is true, it could be great news for new signing Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who has an excellent relationship with the Finnish driver, and Valtteri Bottas would be a great asset to him as he adapts to the newcomer.
