Liam Lawson has spoken out on the podcast about how he feels about McLaren winning glory for the British while hailing from New Zealand.
Lawson, born in the impressive island nation, is not the first New Zealand F1 driver, as the country already has a world champion in Denny Hulme. Yet it is not they, but the papaya-coloured McLaren team that has enjoyed the most success, having been founded by a local, namely Bruce McLaren, who first competed in those colours. Yes, but the team has no connection to the country, unlike England, with which it is connected in many ways. Lawson has had a problem with that…
"I don't see any point in that. McLaren is a fully New Zealand team, even in name. It's a bit like Red Bull Racing, where they play the Austrian anthem when they win, even though their roots are all in England. McLaren is based there too, but they're New Zealanders. From a New Zealand perspective, it seems like a huge stupidity, especially when one of the greatest legends, Bruce McLaren, is the father of the whole thing," Lawson said, expressing his justified criticism.
