One of Mercedes' most respected engineers spoke to the New York Times about how the seven-time world champion was able to achieve such enormous success.
Andrew Shovlin believes that the key factor was not work ethic, obsession or desire to improve, but rather a sick phobia of failure!
"I don't think there's another driver like him. He has a completely unique approach, I really enjoyed working with him. He's incredibly committed to success and demands the same from everyone else. But what really made him great, what's his real superpower, is his sick phobia of failure. He's terribly afraid of it, so he does everything to avoid it, constantly influencing the people around him to achieve it. I don't know of any other driver who has this mindset so strongly present. Of course, everyone hates failure, but the fear of it and the desire to act against it puts Lewis Hamilton far above the rest," Shovlin said with admiration of his former driver.
