It is a very rare feat for someone to lead the F1 drivers' championship (by a massive margin, no less) while also finishing third in the constructors' championship.
With McLaren's resurgence and Scuderia Ferrari's good form, the end of the 2024 season is becoming increasingly exciting. Max Verstappen's world title is not in jeopardy for now, but another win for Lando Norris and a possible 'zeroing out' of Red Bull Racing could bring the sides so much closer together that it could be called an open rivalry.
Until then, however, the Dutchman is heading towards another success that will not only be special because it would be another title defence. His team sits modestly third in the constructors' championship, and if Verstappen does win the world title, he could invoke a 41-year-old record, namely that of Nelson Piquet, who became world champion in 1983 in a car for a team that finished third in the constructors' championship. After the dominance of recent seasons, it is incredibly interesting to write about, but that is exactly the situation we are in now.
